I’m рlаnnіng οn gettin a hedgehog whеn I mаkе enough money tο bυу one. I hаνе thе cage. It’s јυѕt a regular bunny/guinea pig cage. Itѕ pretty long аnd I’m going tο add levels. Bυt I wanted ѕοmе gοοd іdеаѕ οn whаt two рυt іn thеrе. I know јυѕt thе wheel house food аnd water. Bυt whаt аrе ѕοmе really cute cage accessories. I saw a tent instead οf аn igloo οr wood hut. Anything creative please:) oh аnd whаt іѕ thе best brand οf food I ѕhουld υѕе? Thanks:)

I own 2 hedgehogs and will do my best to help you !
Cage = Their are manny cagese too chose fro, yours sounds perfict they need to be a bare minniume of 3 square feet in lenth and its important they have NO levels hogs need ground space as opposed to mutlie leveld cages and are clumsy there for can do them selfs a great deal of damage also by macking levels you are gicing acsess to the bars of the cage and they may get there heads stuck !
Toys = they need a wheel i would not reccomend a tent as a perment bed as they tend to wee in it and it will stink ! with a plastic igloo you can wipe clean ! pvc pipe is a favrot as they like to explore but no tolite tubes ! some like little balls to throw around their cage ! genrley gunnie pig toys are a good chose ! also home mad box toys !
Bedding = news pritnt (aloufgh needs changeing daily and turnes a white hog black ! ) aspine large wood chips felt then you wash it once its dirty NO hay straw sented wood chips like pine or ceder and no saw dust ! it has too mutch dust and causes a whole heap of resptory issues and blocked glands !
Food = food needs to be a mix of dry foods supplmented 4 times a week with treats i recomend you use 2-3 good brand cat and hedgehog fooda spikes delight is a good one but be carfull as most of these hog foods are desighted for wild hogs to fatten them up ! i use apple paws cat food as well you need to give 1-2 meals a day depending on wether you hog eats breakfast i would reccomed low rim water and food bowls but it depends on wether the hog has been brought up on a water bottle ? the meals need to be 2 table spoons of dry food with somthing to supplemrnt that or on a just dry food night i would do 3 table spoons things hogs like as treats are most veg and fruit meal worms live or dead if live kill them first ! crickits wet can food strawberry yougart cottage chese
food should be 30% proteen and no more that 15% fat it needs to be low in rice wheat and all the other filler ingredents in can have no fish in it ! also no onions or grapes !

get cold then this causes them to have syptons of wobbly hog syndrome
if you let them in the grass i would treat for tickes mites and flreas just spray dog fle spray on cottom and wipe over the hog but do not allow them to go back in to the nest box as they need ventlated space !
temprement= they can be happy or grummpy there clour can play part you need to hanndle them daily to tame them and add somthing with you sent on it th there nest box picking them up dose not hurt BUT if you tuck your finger in to there stomocs the will curle up and stab your fingers ! mine have never bitten me and in my expeyance the only time ythey are grummpy is when first woken up |!
handlng= they are wrigley and best hanndled in the evening when THEY are awake ! you need to scope them tp dont hold them om thewre back as it stresses them if you bath them they get real grummpy so give them a treat as i beleve they hold grudegs lol they also like to snuggle with you !
you will need a heat pad to keep them warm !
You need a litter box, and some toys of course! They LOVE toilet paper tubes, Dook and Dance toys (They’re ferret toys, plastic ones with a little bell in it) And anything that makes noise or that they can hide in
Also, when you are putting levels in a hedgehog cage you need to make sure there are tall sides on the upper level, because hedgehogs are used to level ground and will literally back off the edge U. U
The whole food controversy is very confusing. To narrow it down, you basically have two choices; A mixture of high quality cat foods, or a specialty hedgehog food. Personally I feed Spike’s Delite, which I have mailed in. It is very high quality and theres no hassle of mixing the right amount of foods, etc. , And my hedgehog absolutely loves it, I tried switching him once and he tossed all the cat food out of his bowl and left the Spike’s
Oh, and also if there are bars on the side of the guinea pig cage, they may try to climb it and fall.
Have you looked at a Sterilite bin cage? They’re very easy, and safe for hedgies!
It’s basically just two big Tupperware bins connected with a bit of PCV pipe. Very easy to clean, cheap, and practical.
