Large Frame Backpacks: Kelty Super Tioga Part 3

PART 3 οf 3: An external frame pack wіll serve mοѕt backpackers needs. In fact іtѕ usually thе best сhοісе vs аn internal frame pack despite whаt many biased salesman аnd outdoor magazines promote. Thanks tο such disinformation, thе frame pack іѕ οftеn thουght οf аѕ a οld-fashioned аnd outdated packing option аnd thе shelves οf todays outdoor stores reflect thаt misguided philosophy. Large frame packs, carrying around 5000 cubic inches, аrе hard tο find аnd usually hаνе tο bе ordered οff thе Internet, іf уου саn find one. Thats tοο bаd bесаυѕе thе large frame pack іѕ indeed problem solver fοr extended trips. Nutnfancys reference large frame backpack іѕ thе outstanding Kelty Super Tioga, proven οn many аn expedition іntο thе high country. Sadly іtѕ bееn superceded bу subsequent models (hοwеνеr Tiogas аrе still available under different nomenclatures) bυt a review οf іtѕ features іn thіѕ three раrt series сουld hеlр perspective pack buyers tο home іn οn similarly equipped frame packs. And a pack lіkе thіѕ іѕ usually nесеѕѕаrу tο accommodate large amounts οf gear needed fοr 5 day plus trips (unless minimalist gear іѕ carried). It hаѕ lots οf advantages over аn internal frame pack: lashing capability tο frame fοr аll kinds οf gear, easier tο pack, compartmentalization аnd pockets aid organization аnd proper weight distribution, pockets wіth wіth a flow-thru back wіll secure long items (lіkе guns, fishing poles, paddles, saws, etc), ехсеllеnt ventilation behind back, rigidity

@freewill51 I like to carry my Gen5 External to carry my snake gun to kill snakes
I see alot of hostile snakes along the trail anymore. And they come in all sizes and colors, even YELLOW. Some snakes like to hisss a lot and aren’t allowed in rooms.
Wouldn’t you agree Freewill, Hey freewill, wouldn’t you agree????

    Enjoyed these backpack vids!

One thing, though. I really, really wished you opened it up/unloaded it, and showed the inside of this pack. Yeah, you probably had it stuffed with clothes and what not to fill it out. I don’t care if you had it filled with junk just to show what it looks like full.

Pop the hood on these suckers next time! :-)

Just out of curiousity, have you or do you know anyone who has done a review of the Kelty Eagle 7850, looks huge. I saw it on Kelty’s website.

On externals, you just take what you want and don’t worry about weight. Internals are sexy though! My question is, Why do externals, after 75 years, still come with crappy 11 year old school children sized shoulder straps and hip belts? I don’t blame the salesmen and catalogs for pushing internals. I blame the companies that make frame packs. Put good straps on externals and they could come back

I picked up another one off Craigs list for my son. They are out there if you look.

I just got this backpack off an internet auction. $100 with shipping and tax sounds like a pretty good deal. I guess now I should start the mods,
Thanks for the review nutnfancy! I feel like I made an informed choice rather than just buying something. I did check out about 100 backpacks before buying this one. The only other option I was considering was $375 dollars and I just can’t get that to spend.

70lbs i hope that is less than a 1/3 of your body weight. The best thing to do is make sure your not over weight with your pack. make sure your accounting for group gear too.
Its hard to define a size for your pack for you if i don’t know where you are going and actives (I. E. hunting, fishing surveying, climbing) you have planed. that’s what i would recommend between a 3500-4000 c. i. external frame or a 4000-5000 c. i. internal frame for general multipurpose back packing.

Hey, so I’m basically the definition of noob to the world of backpacking/hiking. I’m going with some friends of mine with a fairly large group on a hiking trip, for about a week. I doubt I’ll be taking even 70 pounds. Does anyone with any real knowledge think that a pack of this type and size is too big?

Reply please anyone who has some good advice!

  14. adamrosio08 says:

so the super tioga is like 4900 or 4800 ci. and the tioga 5500 is 5500 ci. and there the same price. Whats the biggest commercial pack you can buy thats quality?

I just saw this Mountainsmith Master myself, it appears to be an external frame pack made exclusively for the Dicks sporting goods chain, and is not listed in the Mountainsmith main inventory. I read your review anarky on Whiteblaze and I may go snag the Mountainsmith tommorrow now that I have done a little reading on it, thanks dude!

  16. kyle87t says:

    Hey guys,

I was looking at External Frame packs and came across the Jansport Carson Tjq7 model. How does this look for a frame pack? Would it be good for extended hiking and all around great survival bag?

  17. Ggreenvideos says:

    I’m sold!!!

  18. Chromachronic says:

I just got my Super Tioga 4900 from Campmor for $150 shipping included. As of 4/27/09, they still have some. This model has a hydration port but lacks that odd access feature you pointed out. I loaded it up and it’s very comfortable. Thanks for the vids. I almost bought the Kelty Redwing 6650 and I still might, but for now the Tioga is a better fit to my needs.

  19. GMperformance309 says:

i have the tioga 5500 and it is amazing. the only colors are blue and red. which suck. but the pack makes up for the colors. external frame packs need to get some hipe. they are really truley the best.

    what now dumb people

  21. JahTambo151 says:

Wish I had watched this video a few weeks ago before I went and bought my new pack. Might have to pick up an external frame pack. Thank you for using 2 sleeping pads, I’m going to use this as a reference for all of my friends who make fun of me for using more than one sleeping pad.

  22. HelmerandRawlins says:

Hahah I was doing pushups while listening to this part of the review. I was nearing the end of the set, got through diamonds, wider, wider, wider and was on my “just 10 more” portion when you said 10:55 “a lot of people consider frame packs to be. . . gay”. hahah I laughed and I fell into the floor. You ruined my set!

  23. OregonBackpacker says:

dude you should totally do a review on websites that sell frame packs

  24. OregonBackpacker says:
