how to care for such a baby puppy?

Well mу fiance аnd I wеrе walking іntο wal mart yesterday morning tο gеt ѕοmе stuff, аnd thеrе wаѕ a guy wіth a sign thаt ѕаіd “Christmas puppies fοr sale” ѕο οf course I ѕtοр tο look… hе hаd a cart full οf 8 tan аnd white puppies thаt саn’t bе older thаn 5 weeks οld even though hе ѕаіd 8 weeks. i wеnt inside tο dο mу shopping аnd whеn I came back out hе wаѕ down tο 5… οf course I took one.

thе puppy іѕ adorable, hе eats dry puppy chow fine, bυt cries A LOT.. I јυѕt gave hіm a bowl οf warm milk аnd hе lapped іt up vigorously аnd іѕ now sound asleep doing thе lіttlе puppy grunting.

hе walks, bυt wobbles аѕ hе wags hіѕ lіttlе tail.

Thе guy ѕаіd hе іѕ a lab mix, bυt hе looks lіkе a pit puppy tο mе.. аt lеаѕt 80 percent pit. I gave thе guy $25 fοr hіm, hе hаd 4 others whеn i left, i wish i сουld hаνе taken thеm All. I аm hoping thеу аll gοt gοοd homes, whеn i took mine, thеrе wаѕ a crowd οf аbουt 20 people around hіm аnd thе cart.

Thіѕ guy wаѕ a scum bag ghetto thug јυѕt wanting money.. i couldn’t walk away without helping 1 οf thеm.. hе hаd thеm іn a shopping cart wіth a blanket іn wіth thеm… thеу wеrе аll huddled up together аnd kids/adults wеrе poking аnd prodding аt thеm, grabbing thеm up аnd putting thеm down lіkе thеу wеrе stuffed animals οn a dіѕрlау shelf.

SO, I dο nοt hаνе thе money tο gο аnd bυу thіѕ puppy thе puppy milk аnd bottles. I аm caring fοr 5 οthеr dogs аnd 5 cats. I јυѕt hаνе a hυgе heart аnd couldn’t leave wal mart yesterday without helping аt lеаѕt 1 οf thеѕе puppies.

Whаt ѕhουld I dο??.. hе seems tο bе doing ok.. hе sleeps/eats/plays/poops/аnd pees јυѕt fine. I hаνе hіm іn a puppy bed whісh іѕ inside a rectangular laundry basket wіth a bіg stuffed teddy bear,a heating pad οn low, аnd a blanket. Hе slept іn іt last night аll night аnd gοt up аt 5am tο eat/potty.

аm i doing ok??.. I аm wanting tο keep hіm аѕ dοеѕ mу fiance.. hе іѕ a lіttlе fighter аnd јυѕt thе cutest thing.

Here іѕ a photo οf hіm..

thanks.
аnd fοr everyone telling mе tο give hіm tο a shelter οr rescue, nο i wіll nοt. Hе іѕ better οff wіth mе thаn іn a kennel аll day whеrе hе сουld wind up dead.

I аm home аll day everyday аnd hе wіll bе wіth mе аt аll times, i hаνе a lot οf time οn mу hands tο care fοr hіm.
Animal hoarder?? I thіnk nοt, bυt nice try.

Animal hoarders DO NOT take care οf thеіr pets аnd live іn squaler conditions.

I DID live іn аn RV bυt аѕ i stated thеn, іt wаѕ TEMPORAIRY. I аm now іn a hυgе 4 bedroom home wіth basement, аnd HUGE fenced іn backyard.. ѕο shush!

I аlѕο hаνе cash іn mу wallet, аnd 2 credit/bank cards аѕ well іf уου MUST know.

I hаνе christmas shopping tο dο fοr a family οf 7! аlѕο more pets tο care fοr!.. I wіll PROBABLY gο ahead аnd bυу thе puppy milk replacer ѕіnсе hе seems tο need іt аnd i dο know thаt cows milk isn’t thе greatest, bυt іn a pinch іtѕ NOT going tο KILL hіm tο hаνе a couple bowls οf іt.

A lot οf уου аrе dense аnd down rіght RUDE аnd thіnk уου аrе much wiser аnd better thаn everyone еlѕе…NEWSFLASH: Yου aren’t аnd уου definetly aren’t perfect οr gods gift tο thе animal world.

I think you are doing fine. I would, however, take him to a vet, and talk to them. Cow’s milk is not good for dogs, so I would try to get puppy milk. A vet will be able to tell you more, such as his breed, age, ect. I hope this helped.

It’s just a shame that you gave an ar$ehole like that the satisfaction of selling all of his pups so easily.

He’ll be back in 6 months with another litter now.

You haven’t helped these puppies really, or their mother and all the puppies to come.

How many of those homes will stick. I’d guess at yours being the only one. They have all been bought on impulse and dogs do not stay in their homes when bought like that. As hard as it was, you should of walked away.

first of all Yes that is a pit I don’t see lab at all. Second I would get that heating pad out of there if it is electric he is gonna wanna chew and that could be very bad thing to chew. If he is eating dry food he should be ok. As for the milk I would ease up on that milk is not really good for dogs after they are weened from mamas milk. good luck with him.

I’m sure you know 5 weeks is too young to leave the mother. But, since they have been taken from her, the pup needs Formula from the Vet. Don’t give it milk, as that just causes diarrhea. Only, water. She cries a lot because she misses her litter mates. You will just have to put up with it for a while. Give her lots of attention.

If you do not have the money to care for him properly, no he is not better off with you, and you should not have brought him home with you. Time is not the only requirement for care. You did not “save” him if he becomes very ill and you don’t have the money for proper vet care (and if you can’t afford puppy milk and a bottle, which are quite cheap, you certainly can’t afford to even worm and vaccinate him) Cow’s milk is likely to seriously upset his stomach, resulting in dehydration. Many labs have blocky heads that closely resemble those of Pits. If he said they were lab mixes, they’re probably lab mixes. As a child I had a dog that looked very much like him when she was a puppy. She was Lab, Border collie, and Kelpie. And a 5 week old puppy should be eating quality moistened dry puppy food and canned food every few hours, which will be slowly changed to all dry food. You are well on your way to being a hoarder, please find him a home that can care for him financially and get youself some help. It is not normal to be compelled to purchase animals to “save” them when you rationally know that you cannot financially support them in the manner they should be cared for.

Add: No- Animal Hoarders are those that take in animals past their ability to provide them with good care (either financially or time-wise). It does not matter if conditions are squalid or not, or what your intentions are. And at the rate you are acquiring animals, you’ll have twenty or thirty dogs in another year or two. I’m sure all the regulars have seen repeated posts from you, frequently about your lack of money to do what you know you should do for your pets, or about your latest puppy acquisition and the problems with that animal. You continue to repeatedly put money into the pockets of people who produce bad-quality puppies, while preaching in your answers to go to a reputable breeder or adopt from a shelter, when you can’t take your own advice. While I feel sorry for the animals in my shelter and those I see in need of homes every day, I do not bring them all home with me to “save” them. I do tell people I know that may be looking for a pet about available animals at the local shelter that would be a good fit for them, and volunteer my time to the shelter to help find them homes- but they don’t come home with me, no matter how cute they may be and how sorry I feel for them. I know what I can afford to care for well, and what I have the time and inclination to provide a good quality of care for. While you may have credit cards, you’re going to dig yourself into a hole of debt that will take decades to climb out of if you continue to take in animals whose care you can’t comfortably afford with the money coming into your home. If you had the funds on hand, you would not have said “I do not have the money to go and buy this puppy the puppy milk and bottles”. And you and your fiance would have taken your cats to the vet for antibiotics to treat their upper respiratory infections rather than medicating one with Sudafed- which had you only googled “Is sudafed safe for cats”, you would know has a very slim margin of safety and can kill them. All hoarders believe in their heart that they are doing the right thing for the animals. All hoarders think they are better than the alternative. And all hoarders try to rationalize bringing home “just one more”. And YES, a bowl or two of cow’s milk CAN kill a young puppy as it can cause vomiting and diarrhea and dehydrate them rapidly- particularly when you don’t have the money for vet care.

  6. †mongrel momma† says:

From what I’ve read in your other questions, you’re a borderline animal hoarder. I hate to say it, but there’s evidence to back it up. You made a question not too long ago about how you and your fiance live in a trailer and had just $60 to last you a week after bringing home another puppy to care for making your # of dogs 5. Now here you are, getting yet another puppy and supporting yet another irresponsible owner. . . sweetheart, all that did was add on to your load and encourage that owner to continue to allow his dogs to breed.

What you’re doing is noble, but not wise in the least. In a rescue, he’d most likely be placed in a foster home with people that can afford him and would be held there until he found a loving home.

Please do what’s best for this little guy and refrain from taking in any more dogs.

edit: In no way was I being dense or rude. Oregano summed up exactly what I would’ve said perfectly.

  7. Lauren Ogilvie says:

you may not want to give him cow milk- sometimes dogs have a harder time digesting it and it could upset their little tummy.

*a 12 oz. can of milk replacer and a bottle is about $15 tops. (we sell them and I just looked at the prices) however, judging from the picture, it looks like he would begin to be weaned (not allowed to have the mom’s milk) for much longer, 2 more weeks TOPS. . . but probably not even that. You may want to try hard food mixed with canned food to help the little guy eat and digest it best

*laundry basket with bear and blanket is very good– :) nice job with the heating pad, it helps
*I wouldn’t let him near the other dogs or cats until you have him checked by a vet. if he was sold for $25 then I’m assuming the man selling him didn’t bother to get him any sort of shots or dewormer (both are NEEDED) the last thing you want is for the puppy or your other animals to get sick.
**also take caution because the other animals may not like him around, and try to put an end to him

good luck, God bless you for trying to help him :)
and congrats on the engagement! may you have a long and healthy marriage :)

  8. Nicola says:

I would say he is about 4 weeks old, I know people will judge you for getting him from some scum bag but I understand how hard it would have been to walk away. Ok so for starters you are going to need to get some goats milk (more like mothers than cows milk), it only costs about £1 for 2 pints mix this with some porridge oats, scrambled eggs, puppy tinned food or cooked mince, also carry on giving him dry aswell, you will need to give him this extra food though because he will need as many calories and nutrients as possible at this age. Feed him about 5 times a day for the next 4 weeks then you can reduce it to about 3 times.
You are doing very well with the heat pad and considering he’s sleeping until 5am seems to be pretty happy with his bed. Keep up what you are doing and he will be fine, he is lucky to have found someone that will take care of him, I can’t see any reason why he would need a vet check up yet, he is pooping/peeing fine, he’s eating and drinking so there is no need for the vet.

  9. Jessica says:

Way to go for funding his next litter!. You gave him MONEY so that he will come back with more pups to sell next time. You should be ashamed of yourself. You are no animal rescuer. Disgusting.

EDIT: This woman is a crazy hoarder. DO NOT engage her. Here’s another one of her questions: “NO money for a vet. . i have 4 cats and they are all sneezing with discharge. . 2 of them have green discharge in nose and eye crusty’s.

what is this?? is it a URI?

they eat/drink/pee/poo/play just fine though. . i don’t understand it. they’ve had it for like a month already”

5 cats, and what, 5 dogs? You are SICK and really need to get help. I feel so bad for your fiance.

  10. Abra says:

The pup should be weaned, pups start being weaned from the mother at 4 weeks so no need for the puppy milk. I would have done the same thing :) Just make sure you get him to the vet as soon as possible!

  11. Rayven ~ Here we Go Again says:

Considering your OTHER puppies I don’t see how you have time for him. YES he’s better off in a shelter. I really don’t see why you didn’t let the store manager know this man was out front. You’re a hoarder and you need to get some help STOP COLLECTING PUPPIES

Might have some pit might not. The fact you had to ask several times not that long ago about whether a BEAGLE mix was a pit or not I really doubt you even know what a real APBT looks like

puppy kibble and water are fine. IF you must feed milk and the vet agrees goat’s or puppymilk replacer.

Rescues don’t put down adopted-able animals. Turn him over to a rescue or no kill so he actually ends up in a good home.

ETA: Fine you are BOARDERLINE Hoarder and you take on too many animals.

you have 5 cats you can’t provide vet care for. TWO new dachshund pups from a puppymill(which you were told NOT to buy from) and a beagle mix you bought off some mook in a park who told you it was a pit.

I may not be god’s gift to animals, but YOU aren’t even close to being a responsible owner.

  12. Still Can't Think of a Name says:

It’s sometimes better to let one puppy go so more don’t follow. He was paid, so that guy will be back with more litters. And it doesn’t matter if you have Christmas shopping to do; puppy formula comes first, now that you’ve taken it home. You should be able to afford it if you are financially stable and able to care for all of your pets. Otherwise, you’re just a hoarder. What happens if the puppy gets sick?

  13. Emilay Lautner says:

I think you are doing amazing. I would recommend you get puppy milk and a bottle, though. I got my dog when she was only 4 weeks and we bottle fed her, it actually seemed to help her think that we were her pack.

  14. Alesi's Chis Suspended at Last! says:

I too am confused at the hypocrisy. I’ve seen you repeatedly bash irresponsible breeding and ownership, perhaps to align yourself with the popular point of view, and here you are doing the polar opposite of what you preach. There is no theory under which this latest puppy is better off with you than at a shelter, where if he is 5 weeks old, he will be fostered for a couple of weeks, with proper vet care and formula until he’s weaned, and then probably adopted as soon as his cute little @ss hits the shelf. Yet you’d rather be selfish and keep him, knowing you can’t even afford basic care for him alone, let alone the other pets you have that are by your own admission sick and are stuck with home remedies instead of the antibiotics they clearly need. You don’t see anything at all wrong with not only with your contention that you can provide a proper home for him, but that hoarding isn’t even a remote possibility? Do you think hoarders start out with 100 animals, or do they ‘rescue’ them one by one? My definition of a hoarder is taking in additional animals when you already can’t take proper care of the ones you have. I’d love to save as many as my house can fit, but I know they would be the ones to suffer and I have the sense to draw a line where it needs to be drawn. And yes, in that way I’ve got it all over you when it comes to caring for the animals I bring into my home

  15. !There is no cure for Ignorance! says:

Just do the best you can do for that puppy you have whilst others have bashed you on here you have taken the puppy on so make sure you do the best you can for this puppy.
