I’d strongly suggest two books, Tim Homan’s North Georgia Mountains and the Georgia Conservancy’s guide. If you’re only getting one, make it Homan’s. I have no financial interest or any other interest whatsoever in the sales of these books. Have fun!

If you go to Helen Ga. there is a campground on the creek you can have pets there. Also state parks will let you have your dog with you. Most of the state parks is enjoyable up there. I go all the time. Search on Ga. State Parks and it will show you want they have at the park. If you go to the mts. the Vogel state park is very nice. They have water to play in and a creek. If you live in Atlanta for a get away weekend in Winder ga. they have Fort Yargo is great I go there all the time. Water, walking trails, fishing, bike trails this park has it all.
    Hope you have fun.
