Apparently the way the yard was set up there were two fences so the back part with the tents, etc were hidden. Apparently either a high fence or a lot of vegetation around the back. But I would think if I had a fifty foot yard and the yard two houses down had a 50 foot (for example) yard and the one in the middle was 20 feet there would be a question about what was behind his house. And what was directly behind him, more houses or fields. I know there was an empty field somewhere because they think he killed prostitutes and buried them or something.
I’ve had odd neighbors a few times and it’s easy to see when something happens “Yeah, I should have known that or realized that”, but maybe all they wanted to do was avoid the strange people, not check them out to see what was going on. But those kids must have been taught to be very quiet. Normal kids make noise when they play, even good kids who don’t scream and yell and things like that.
It was all very well fenced. Actually, one neighbor DID call the police, and they sent two police men out to check it out. Unfortunately, Garrido sweet-talked them into thinking everything was just fine. Even tho they knew he was a registered sex offender, they didn’t even bother to look in the backyard! This was 2006!!!
The female security officer at UC Berkeley was suspicious about Garrido the day he was on campus. Then the female police officer got involved with her “hunch,” so she checked things out further.
It was these two FEMALE officers who made it possible to find this young woman and her two children — if it wasn’t for their thinking, Garrido would still be getting away with his dastardly deeds.
I say kudos to these two women, who pursued because something didn’t “sit right” with them. Meanwhile, the male officers caused three more years of suffering for Jaycee and her children.
Perhaps “women’s intuition” is a lot stronger and a lot more effective than most people are willing to admit. . . .
