A tent isn’t suitable for windy rainy conditions. You could always take it down, but mist likely, with kids. . . . it will be easily tore up.
I think it is a great idea. Especially to build a childs imagination!
An inexpensive tent would make a good play house for your kids when the weather is decent. If the weather is windy and raining, your children belong *indoors* in the house where it is safe. I once set up a tent in my back yard after a camping trip, to clean it and let it air out for a few days. My children loved playing in it while it was set up in the yard.
One evening a thunderstorm swept through the area very quickly. Of course the children were inside our home during the storm. The tent was still standing after the storm, the wind or rain did not budge the tent. . . . . . but lightning had shattered one of the poles of the tent. If my kids had been in that tent during that storm, they would most likely have died.
A cheap camping tent can serve as a kids’ playhouse, Ozark Trail 10×13 Tent, $100. However, a durable storm tent is an expensive toy: Stormking MSR, $1,000.
Kids have all kinds of fun playing in tents, but they are not designed for long-term setup or heavy use. The seams will separate and the thin nylon will start to tear after a few weeks of constant sun, weather and use. The best plan is to setup the tent for a weekend and let the kids play, then clean it up, let it dry out and store it for another weekend.
Canvas tents will last longer, but you could buy a nice plastic storage shed for the price of a good canvas tent, which would last even longer and make for a nice play house or club house.
My Mom had the same idea when we kids I think the tent lasted about a week before it was trashed. It also faded in the sun very quickly and the fabric become thin and full of holes. She got a hold of an old refrigerator box and that lasted much longer and we had a lot more fun with it.
Yes, your kids would love it, but tents really aren’t all that cheap. Constant play may wear it out, too
