From your discussion, I think that you are looking for a tent that will serve as space for a young child, but will continue to serve a useful life for a young adult. Also, I believe you are looking for a tent that has two doorways for access or an access point that opens to a joint between the parent tent and the child tent. Furthermore, you want a shelter to connect the individual tents.
Since you are looking for a tent to last a long time and serve a young adult who may want to be very independent and mobile, I suggest that you look at various lightweight backpacking tents. You are not going to find a zip-together unit that matches your existing tent, especially since Walrus is no longer a viable company. You are probably looking at a tarp arrangement that provides rain shelter between two units. Otherwise, you are looking at a multi-room tent, which you have already dismissed or a new tent with a gear storage room for your child, such as MSR Gear Shed, $150.
Consider a high-quality, lightweight tent from a source such as: Sierra Designs, MSR, The North Face.
2-3 years of age is still way to young too be in a separate tent or an attached tent with it’s own opening. Kids are very smart and a sound sleeper will miss a child slipping out the door in a heart beat. There are tents that you all ready have referred to with multiple sections of the tent divided by interior walls these are your best choice to use until your kids are at least 10-12 years of age. Family camping tents don’t need to break the budget and Coleman is the leader in these tent type designs with stay dry guarantees and ease of set up. For you I recommend the Coleman Elite Weathermaster 6 tent it has multiple rooms and one main door and a more complicated side door to keep the little one in a screened room for napping so if your up you can keep a watchful eye.
Another option is the Eureka copper canyon again a multi room tent with one main door.
Another yet is a Swiss Gear Montreaux multi room tent again with one main door and looking very much like a small house.
