Lightweight / Ultralight Backpacking – The Obvious Choice

Edit Article |

Lightweight backpacking or ultralight backpacking certainly enable you to travel more miles in a day. I can easily go farther in my running shoes, with my fifteen-pound pack on, than I could with heavy hiking boots and a forty-pound pack. That isn’t all, though. Going light also means more comfort, more freedom and even more safety. Disadvantages Of Traditional BackpackingLess freedom. It isn’t easy to take a side trip up that hill, just to see what’s there. Do it without your pack, and you have to go back the same way to get your pack. More tiring. It’s clearly more tiring with a heavy pack, and you probably won’t enjoy yourself as much when you are tired. More Injuries. Blistered feet, sprained ankles, sore muscles, and back and knee problems are just some of the common consequences of too much weight on your back. More hassle. Removing and putting on a heavy pack quickly becomes a chore. Some backpackers start to leave it on during rest stops, just so they don’t have to deal with it. Slower. Weight equals slower progress, meaning less access to wild places, since you can’t go as far on a trip. It can also mean less time to for enjoyable activities, like a swim in a mountain lake, or a relaxing evening in camp. Riskier. Injuries are more likely with heavy packs, but that’s not the only risk. The inability to move as quickly when a storm is coming or when an emergency requires you to get to a road, can be a real problem. Then there is the possibility of bad decisions due to tiredness. Lightweight Backpacking AdvantagesSafety. Have all necessary items, but bring lighter versions. Lighten the load, and you’re less likely to lose your balance and fall, or otherwise injure yourself. You can also respond faster to iffy situations. Safety is also a matter of knowledge and experience. Expert survivalists are safer with no shelter than a neophyte with the best tent. Know how to use you equipment properly, or to read the sky for comimg storms, and you can go lighter and safer. Comfort. Does 18 pounds on your back instead of 50 sound nice? I completely stopped getting blisters when I started using running shoes instead of hiking boots. There’s no sacrifice here. Eliminate twenty-five pounds of pack weight, and you can add back a heavier coat, or whatever you need to be comfortable. Speed and freedom. When I walk past overloaded backpackers struggling up steep trails, and I have an eleven-pound pack on, I remember being in their place, and I know I am enjoying myself more now. Lightweight backpacking allows you to move faster, but notice I say “allows. ” No requirement, just the option, and that means more freedom. Never yet have I met or heard about a person who tried lightweight backpacking, and then went back to a heavy load. This isn’t to say it’s for everyone. Some hiker’s bad ankles may require heavy hiking boots, and some bad habits require a big pack to satisfy them. Still,  even a backpacker who needs a pillow and big rectangular sleeping bag, can find these in lighter forms. Try it. You’ll experience more freedom, more comfort, more safety, more enjoyment and less suffering. The first time you are fifteen miles into the day, and you realize that you can easily run up that hill – just to see what is there, you’ll know you made the right decision. You’ll love lightweight backpacking.

The Basics of Tent Camping

Tent camping is an activity my family has been involved in for many years. Our camping trips combine fishing, hiking, and swimming to the regular camp site life of cutting wood, starting a fire, food preparation, cooking, eating, games, and just relaxing. We’ve made a lot of good memories from our camping trips. We’ve always gone up in the mountains and found great camping hiking spots either at designated campgrounds that offer water for washing, and some type of restroom (out house or rest-stop type), and garbage cans, or places where there were no creature comforts at all. We always camped by streams, lakes, or rivers during the summer months.
If you intend to have a successful camping experience, planning is important. As a retired Army Airborne Ranger, who has had to live out of a ruck (back pack) for many days, having the right camping gear when you’re camping will make the experience that much more enjoyable. The best camping tents for families are tents that have separate rooms. Since we have two children our tent has three rooms — my wife and I sleep in a room, the kids sleep in a room, and the entrance room is for dressing and storage. We use a combination of foam and inflatable mattresses. We use rectangular sleeping bags that you can zip together for the wife and I, and the kids have their own individual bags. Bring extra blankets for chilly nights. We also use poncho liners for the kids to use inside their sleeping bags. We’ve had our tent for over 15 years and average 2-3 camping trips each summer.
We also take a couple of tarps. We use one tarp on the ground under the tent and make it long enough to have about 8 feet in front of the tent door. We take our shoes/boots off outside to keep the inside of the tent as clean as possible. We bring a small folding stool to place outside the tent door to help with putting shoes on. The second tarp is used to cover our kitchen/cooking gear if it rains.
We use two camping stoves – one uses propane (which we mainly use for heating water for hot drinks and washing) and the other is a 2 burner stove and uses fuel, which does not burn as hot. We use this one for cooking bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. Bring a couple of frying pans, and camping pots/pans – remember to bring a spatula if you’re going to cook pancakes or eggs.
We always start a fire in the morning(for warmth) and in the evening, for cooking. Bring a collapsible grate to put over the fire if you plan on laying anything on it to cook or heat up. We make pointed sticks by cutting small branches from nearby trees for the polish dogs or bratwurst – so bring a couple of knives. We cut our own wood from the dead branches and logs you find near the campground. We bring an axe and small saw with a folding blade to get the wood the right size to fit in the fire pit.
Here are the basics of camping gear to bring:
Tent with rain fly, tarp, tent stakes, and hammer
Sleeping gear to include mattresses – inflatable or foam, blankets (poncho liners), and pillows
Cooking/kitchen equipment – camping stoves, folding camping table, frying pans, pots to heat water and cook in, paper plates, bowls, and utensils, napkins, paper towels, wash rags, towels, cutlery, large spoons, tongs, can opener, lighters, tin foil, plastic wash basin, scouring pads, disposable wipes, detergent, plastic storage bags, and trash bags. We pack this in see-though plastic tubs with folding lids. We pack most of our non-cooler food in these types of containers, too.
Fire pit necessities – if you plan on scrounging your own wood from the forest floor – axe, folding saw, gloves, newspaper for fire starting, lighter, a folding grate (campfire tripod), and a folding shovel.
Personal hygiene – soap, wash cloths, towels (dark in color), shampoo and shower shoes (if your campground has a shower), toothpaste, and toilet paper.
Safety equipment – flashlights, lantern, spare batteries, cell phone with car charger, map of the area, first aid kit, compass or GPS, and plenty of drinking water.
These are some of the items you’ll need to have an enjoyable camping trip. After your first trip, you’ll be able to fine-tune your list. Tent camping takes a lot of prep work, but it is so worth it for the memories you’ll always have.

What You Should Do To Prepare Yourself For Camping

So you want to take your kids camping just like you did as a child with your parents of grandma or grandpa.   Opps the camp ground they took you to is now condos on the lake . Let assume you are new to camping but you have some experience as a child.   You will need to become familiar with camping gear.   If you have a friend that camps a lot you can  go with them to learn the basics.  Ah go with a friend and show him he is smarter then me not a chance.   For I would never hear the end of it. The first thing you will need is some type of shelter for you and the kids.    Then you will need some thing to sleep in a sleeping bag and something to cook with.   Pots and pans portable barbecue hey I know how to use that.   Already you are on the road to your first camping trip. What Gear Do I Need? Most first timers start out with a tent.   The first tent should not be to expensive but it should provide good shelter in the wind and rain. With all the models out there spend some time looking them over do not get one that requires a masters degree in engineering to set up.   Stay to the basic needs as you get more experience the tent can be given to the kids as you will upgrade to a fancy one. Remember you are camping on a budget no use in spending thousands of dollars for all the gear only to find the wife , kids, or your self hates camping.   The tent should shield you from bugs sun and the rain.  More than 600 easy to do money saving tips in the 10-Minute Tech The Book. There are bugs our here in the wilderness so be ware.   The tent should have a good screen to keep the little varmints out and yet be easy for the kids to open.   The tent will be some place to sleep and store your cloths.   If the weather turns bad them the kids can play or read in the tent under supervision.   It is nice to sleep under the stars but you will have to get a tent sooner or later.  So choose one that has enough room for you and the family and all the gear you will want to put in the tent while you are out swimming. Your tent should cost between 100 to 200 dollars depending on the style you pick for your familyIf you want to sleep in a tent or under the stars up should have some type of padding The ground is not comfortable  to sleep on. You will find padded mats made from plastic with air bubbles, vinyl cover stuffed pads  and the good old air mattress.  I prefer the air mattress as it also doubles for the family to float around on the lake.   If you go with the air mattress remember you will need a pump to blow them up a large foot pump works best. Sleeping bagsIf you are like most people you will be camping in the summer and early fall so do not buy a sleeping bag rated for -20 weather this will just be extra money that could be use for some thing other thing you will want. The light rectangular sleeping bag will do If you and your spouse want to sleep in the same sleeping bag just zip them together and you will have one large sleeping bag.   Do not forget your pillows but if you do roll up your towels they can make not a bad pillow. Be sure to have at least two ground tarps at least the size of the floor of your tent.   Place on down on the ground then set your tent on it.   The second one may be used as a shelter above the picnic table. Campground Cooking All of use love the smell of food cooking outside  whether it is at the camp ground or in the backyard.   If you barbecue a lot at home you all ready have the basic now how  to camp cook.   Most public camp grounds and private camp ground will have a picnic table and a cooking pit at each camp site. Take a portable grill with you and you will feel right at home. Pick up a gas stove and a set of pots and pans and you are ready to be a camp chef, remember a coffee pot as the nearest coffee shop may be 20 or so miles away.  Depending on you level of cooking skills you will now be able to prepare meats as if you were at home. When shopping for gear go to the local big box store as they will carry every thing you need.   Some will have tents set up if so climb in ask yourself is this roomy and will every one fit in comfortable. along with all the stuff you will take with you. If the tents are not set up mark out a piece of the floor at home with tape this will be the same size as the floor of the tent call a family meeting and get every body to lay in the tape lines you laid down is it the right size?   If not reassess your needs. That’s it. . . you are that much closer to have a fun camping trip for all!

A History Of Sleep – How We Got The Modern Mattress

When you think of a mattress, you probably get images of a firm, white rectangle, filled with metal springs and topped with foam and cotton. Or, you might think of space age memory foam, latex mattresses, or other brand new sleep technology. But the mattress hasn’t been like this forever. In fact, these modern mattresses haven’t been around all that long at all. Before that, we slept on a wide variety of different surfaces and mattresses. Here’s a look at some of the mattresses of the past, and how we got where we are today. The first mattresses were pads or bags of some kind of supportive material. Over the centuries, what went in the mattress has varied, as have the number of mattresses used. For instance, many people – even wealthy ones – have slept on a base of clean straw, reeds, or grain husks, stuffed tightly into a closely woven bag. Poor people might only have this “straw tick,” but wealthier ones in Europe would cover their base mattresses with wool or featherbeds – thin mattresses that softened the bottom one. These might be layered to produce a really soft bed. By the eighteenth century, American and European people began to use mattresses stuffed mostly with wool or cotton. Poor people might still have used straw, though. Support for these mattresses tended to come in two kinds. You could either sleep on a flat platform style bed, with slats to support the mattress, or a rope, cloth, or leather support that worked more like a hammock. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the box spring was invented, and mattresses became a little less lumpy. This was the start of the modern bed as we know it, but the mattress that went on top was still much the same. Some of them now had special cover stitching and were closer to the same shape as modern mattresses, but they were still full of the same materials. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the innerspring became common. These mattresses included metal springs inside of a rectangular case full of filler material and covered with cotton or other padding. Encased springs made sleeping easier. During World War II, families were actually encouraged to make their own mattresses at home – something most of us wouldn’t dream of today. We’re still using innerspring mattresses, but they’ve become a lot more complex – featuring artificial foams, special zoned construction and all kinds of other innovations. In the 1950s, the first foam rubber mattresses and pillows became widely available, and in the 1960s, the waterbed came into existence. Memory foam was developed by NASA in the 1970s, but didn’t make it into consumer use until the mid-1990s. Other foam mattresses, such as soy and latex, have also become popular. Now, there are more options for sleep surfaces than there’s ever been, so everyone can get a great night’s sleep!

Kids Bean Bag Chairs

]]>

Bean bag chairs have come a long way from the 60’s and 70’s when they it seemed like every hippie had one. They are making a big comeback, and are much better than they were three or four decades ago. No longer do you have to worry about the filling coming out, and many have a choice of either environmentally friendly beads, or even memory foam strips, which can be as comfortable as sleeping on a bed. There are also an abundance of different shapes, covering styles as well as colors, and are no longer just for kids or old hippies.
The costs have gone up a little since the old days, with smaller four foot chairs ranging around $150. Larger rectangular styles that can sit up to five people at a time can cost upwards of $500, depending on where you find them. Don’t make this deter you though, because many of these have a lifetime warranty to make sure that they will last a lot longer than ever before. With a variety of different fabrics like microfiber, suede, cotton twill or even leather, you will find something that goes with any room in your house.
With all the different sizes available, you really should think about which one is going to be right for you and the room it will be in. If you are looking for something to substitute for a couch, then you should measure the space available, and get a long, rectangular model that will accommodate you, your family and even your guests. For single chairs, it depends if you are wanting to sit more upright, or in a reclining position. Pick smaller, four foot sizes if you want to sit more forward, larger for reclining positions.
You may think that bean bag chairs are only for you kids, but that simply isn’t true. They can be a comfort and joy for people of any age. If you are a gamer, then you know what it’s like to have to sit in an uncomfortable chair or on the floor for hours at a time. For people with back pain, having the shredded memory foam filler can be a God send, because the chair caresses and supports your body in the right places, without harsh pressure points that many chairs and couches have.
Before you buy the first bean bag chair off of the internet, here are a few more tips to help you buy the best one for the best price. Some companies sell bag chairs that have the traditional beads, and others use shredded memory foam. If you want a chair that is going to fluff back up, even after years of use, buy the memory foam. Make sure that the covers are removable, for easy cleaning, and that the liner which keeps the filler in place is of heavy duty materials.
When it comes to giant bean bag chairs and couches, it is a good idea to shop around and compare prices over several companies. You need to look for ones with the longest warranty, even if this means spending the 20-40 dollars extra. Keep your eyes out for special discounts especially during the holidays.

Different Kinds Of Down Sleeping Bags

Edit Article |

]]>

Here are few useful tips to be followed while going on a hiking or trekking trip. The main thing one should carry with him/her is the sleeping bag, which can be used to load things on trekking during the day and can used as a sleeping bags during night time. No matter if you do not have one now with you. Several varieties and different shapes of sleeping bags are available in the market catering to our needs and demands. There are bags available which can accommodate two people at a time. Primarily these bags come in three different shapes like:1. The Mummy Style or Cocoon Style 2. The Rectangular Style 3. The Tapering Style. Branded bags are also available. The most important thing one has to keep in mind while steeping out to purchase these sleeping bags is the kind of filling used in them. These bags can be filled with stuffs like cotton, polyester, fiber and down. Among all these the down sleeping bags are generally preferred by the trekkers, as it is filled with natural down feathers. These natural down feathers generally generate a warmth feel which best suits the cold weather and proves comfortable for the trekkers when they are planning to such a place. These sleeping bags are normally very light in nature so it can be folded easily and is portable too. Carrying them will be very easy and the remaining space can be used to fill other necessary stuffs. When it comes to the difference between the sleeping bags and other materials, the down filling bags are considered to be the advisable quality. Since the down traps air and offer more insulation than synthetic fiber it keeps you warmer than other bags. And the life of these down bags last longer than other stuff bags. Synthetic fills cannot be reconditioned and will loose its loft in the due course whereas in the down part of the bags can be fluffed up once again. If maintained with due care these bags can be under good use even for a decade without any problem. The major drawback of this sleeping bag is that it is more delicate and when gets wet, it takes a longer time to dry and lose their capacity to insulate. This can be met with a proper care by the user. Another set back is that it is comparatively costlier than other stuffed bags like synthetic or fiber. But if the cost is not a hurdle then the down bags is the best choice of the trekkers.

Warm Sleeping Bag – Choose One With Confidence

Edit Article |

]]>

There are several different things to think about when you are deciding on which type of warm sleeping bag to buy. You’ve heard of synthetic, down and backpacking sleeping bags, but which one is really the best. The better question would be: Which bag will keep me warm in the conditions I’ll be in?
One of the first things you need to take into consideration when choosing a warm bag is your body size. The slumber bag needs to be a little larger than your body, without too much space between the bag and your body. That space between the two is where the warm air is trapped, which keeps you warm. A mummy shaped bag is best for cold weather camping and a rectangular shape is best for warmer weather camping.
It’s also extremely important to know the average temperature and weather conditions for the area you’ll be backpacking or camping in. A warm slumber bag that’s rated 5 or 10 degrees warmer than the average temperature where you’ll be sleeping is best. If weight is a major consideration for your backpacking slumber bag, use a lighter bag along with a sleeping pad to insulate the bottom of the bag. If it’s winter or there’s wet weather, a backpacking bag that has a water resistant outer shell is important. This shell should still be breathable though, so you don’t get wet from your own sweat. Sometimes a bivy bag is used over a slumber bag to stay dry or to make it extra warm.
Another consideration in choosing a warm sleeping bag is whether to buy a synthetic or a down filled bag. A Synthetic bag can be heavier and less compressible. However, they can also be less expensive, are easy to clean and they still insulate quite well when they’re wet. Down slumber bags on the other hand are lightweight, very warm and breathable, but they are harder to clean, cost more money initially and aren’t very insulating when wet.
In a nutshell, there are several things that need to be taken into consideration when buying a warm sleeping bag. First, choose one that is the right size and shape for your body. Next, do your research and find out the average temperature and weather conditions for where you’re going. Finally, decide if a synthetic or a down sleeping bag will best suit your needs. If you’ve done those things, then you’re ready to buy your ideal warm sleeping bag.

how to care for such a baby puppy?

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Well mу fiance аnd I wеrе walking іntο wal mart yesterday morning tο gеt ѕοmе stuff, аnd thеrе wаѕ a guy wіth a sign thаt ѕаіd “Christmas puppies fοr sale” ѕο οf course I ѕtοр tο look… hе hаd a cart full οf 8 tan аnd white puppies thаt саn’t bе older thаn 5 weeks οld even though hе ѕаіd 8 weeks. i wеnt inside tο dο mу shopping аnd whеn I came back out hе wаѕ down tο 5… οf course I took one.

thе puppy іѕ adorable, hе eats dry puppy chow fine, bυt cries A LOT.. I јυѕt gave hіm a bowl οf warm milk аnd hе lapped іt up vigorously аnd іѕ now sound asleep doing thе lіttlе puppy grunting.

hе walks, bυt wobbles аѕ hе wags hіѕ lіttlе tail.

Thе guy ѕаіd hе іѕ a lab mix, bυt hе looks lіkе a pit puppy tο mе.. аt lеаѕt 80 percent pit. I gave thе guy $25 fοr hіm, hе hаd 4 others whеn i left, i wish i сουld hаνе taken thеm All. I аm hoping thеу аll gοt gοοd homes, whеn i took mine, thеrе wаѕ a crowd οf аbουt 20 people around hіm аnd thе cart.

Thіѕ guy wаѕ a scum bag ghetto thug јυѕt wanting money.. i couldn’t walk away without helping 1 οf thеm.. hе hаd thеm іn a shopping cart wіth a blanket іn wіth thеm… thеу wеrе аll huddled up together аnd kids/adults wеrе poking аnd prodding аt thеm, grabbing thеm up аnd putting thеm down lіkе thеу wеrе stuffed animals οn a dіѕрlау shelf.

SO, I dο nοt hаνе thе money tο gο аnd bυу thіѕ puppy thе puppy milk аnd bottles. I аm caring fοr 5 οthеr dogs аnd 5 cats. I јυѕt hаνе a hυgе heart аnd couldn’t leave wal mart yesterday without helping аt lеаѕt 1 οf thеѕе puppies.

Whаt ѕhουld I dο??.. hе seems tο bе doing ok.. hе sleeps/eats/plays/poops/аnd pees јυѕt fine. I hаνе hіm іn a puppy bed whісh іѕ inside a rectangular laundry basket wіth a bіg stuffed teddy bear,a heating pad οn low, аnd a blanket. Hе slept іn іt last night аll night аnd gοt up аt 5am tο eat/potty.

аm i doing ok??.. I аm wanting tο keep hіm аѕ dοеѕ mу fiance.. hе іѕ a lіttlе fighter аnd јυѕt thе cutest thing.

Here іѕ a photo οf hіm..

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/MarineWifey19/puppy1-1.jpg

thanks.
аnd fοr everyone telling mе tο give hіm tο a shelter οr rescue, nο i wіll nοt. Hе іѕ better οff wіth mе thаn іn a kennel аll day whеrе hе сουld wind up dead.

I аm home аll day everyday аnd hе wіll bе wіth mе аt аll times, i hаνе a lot οf time οn mу hands tο care fοr hіm.
Animal hoarder?? I thіnk nοt, bυt nice try.

Animal hoarders DO NOT take care οf thеіr pets аnd live іn squaler conditions.

I DID live іn аn RV bυt аѕ i stated thеn, іt wаѕ TEMPORAIRY. I аm now іn a hυgе 4 bedroom home wіth basement, аnd HUGE fenced іn backyard.. ѕο shush!

I аlѕο hаνе cash іn mу wallet, аnd 2 credit/bank cards аѕ well іf уου MUST know.

I hаνе christmas shopping tο dο fοr a family οf 7! аlѕο more pets tο care fοr!.. I wіll PROBABLY gο ahead аnd bυу thе puppy milk replacer ѕіnсе hе seems tο need іt аnd i dο know thаt cows milk isn’t thе greatest, bυt іn a pinch іtѕ NOT going tο KILL hіm tο hаνе a couple bowls οf іt.

A lot οf уου аrе dense аnd down rіght RUDE аnd thіnk уου аrе much wiser аnd better thаn everyone еlѕе…NEWSFLASH: Yου aren’t аnd уου definetly aren’t perfect οr gods gift tο thе animal world.

Sleeping Bag Guide

If you are a regular camper or like to be prepared for all occasions a good quality sleeping bag is must-have piece of camping equipment.    But which sleeping bag should you buy?  There are so many different types of sleeping bag available from numerous brands it is a question that is harder to answer than you may think.   The best way to decide on a sleeping bag is to look at your requirements i. e. what you will be using the sleeping bag for, where you will be using it and when.
If you just want a sleeping bag for when guests come to stay then a regular shaped rectangular sleeping bag should suffice.   It needn’t have to fold up too compactly as it can be stored in a cupboard, the garage or loft when not in use. The temperature rating of a sleeping bag that will mainly be used indoors shouldn’t need to be too robust as hopefully there will be some heating present in the house.   The main option when it comes to choosing a sleeping bag for indoor use is whether to get a single or a double sleeping bag.   If you cannot decide and want to be prepared for couples and single guests a sleeping bag that can be transformed from a single to a double like the Redstone Double Sleeping Bag is a very good option.
If you are more of the outdoors type and will be using your sleeping bag in a tent or even under the stars there are a few more things to consider.   Although double sleeping bags are great for camping trips they can be a bit heavy to carry and often take up more space than two mummy-style single sleeping bags.   If you are going to be carrying your camping equipment on your back then the weight and size the sleeping bag compacts to is very important.   Also the temperature rating needs to be considered if the bag is going to be used outdoors.   The season rating ranges from 1 to 5 with 1 being the least protective making the bag ideal for summer and 5 being the highest giving the sleeping bag usability suited to as temperatures as low as -15 degrees and ideal for expeditions.   The higher the season rating the more sleeping bag tends to cost so think carefully where you will be using the bag and don’t waste money on rating you won’t ever need – are you really going to be heading out to the Mount Everest base camp anytime soon?
Once you have decided on the style of the sleeping bag (rectangular, mummy, single or double) and the season rating (1 for summer, to 5 for expeditions) then it’s time to look at the brands available.   Many camping equipment stores such as Blacks or Millets have their own brands of sleeping bags which get good reviews and cost a fair bit less than the more recognisable brand names. When picking a brand you are probably better off setting a budget, listing your requirements and then picking a brand that meets your specifications rather than just going for a brand you like.  Some popular brands of sleeping bag include: Coleman, The North Face and Gelert.
