I checked out hostels in Mexico and checked out puerto vallarta – says closed till September (low season now). google hostels in Mexico for more.

In high season Feb Mar 2010 I noticed hotels along the Malecon (ocean drive) in Mazatlan were advertised from 3000 pesos per month (240 USD). Food is relatively cheap and you can eat decently from street vendrs. Some restaurants you can eat meals for as low as 5$. I dont know anything about bus transport – no passenger trains in Mexico other thanCopper Canyon.
I would be extremely careful out in the country as there has been a lot of violence – usually between rival cartels and/or with police. Border towns and some states further south like SInaloa (where Mazatlan is located). Some robberies of foreigners also but those are for vehicles.
Good luck on your journeys.
This tip is good for the city:
Buy your food in the outdoors markets (:
The fruits and vegetables taste incredible, and many are organic. The quality of the dairy products is far superior to supermarket brands. The meat, poultry and fish are quite fresh. All in all, you will find higher quality food at a lesser price.
Go later in the afternoon, when the markets are about to close and the stalls are starting to empty. The vendors need to sell the rest of their stock, so they’ll offer an even cheaper price, or throw in some extras for free.
I’m sure you’ve heard this ad nauseam, but drink bottled water only. If you can carry it, buy the big five-gallon bottles. In the long run, it’s much cheaper than using up lots of smaller ones.
hi.
buses could be the most expensive thing.
try mexicocity craigslist for rideshare. i think its called ‘com. coche’ on craigslist. com
id also recomend couchsurfing. com for obvious reasons.
lastly, for a good taste of the real mexico, on a bohemian manner, i HIGHLY suggest Huatulco area.
GREAT hostel situation there, CHEAP to eat, live.
try “hosteles en huatulco” google search.
if you want, i can find you a cheap place near acapulco on the beach with some friends.
